The annual lawn bowls carnival is back!

Tuesday, 07 November 2023

Ten villages, 18 teams and one ‘bowl’ of an event, the annual inter-village bowling carnival held at Mosman Park Bowling Club in Western Australia was a remarkable one.

The bowling carnival brought together retirement villages across WA to participate in a day of friendly competition. The event marked the return of this annual tradition after a 3-year hiatus due to COVID-19, and with the addition of a Keyton team participating for the first time made this year a particularly special one.

The event's popularity was evident when 9 out of the 10 villages attended the event, with Woodstock West even making a 4-hour return trip from Bunbury to participate in the event.

A day of action

The day started with residents arriving in the morning, enjoying refreshments, and kicking off the action with a spider competition, which involved all residents standing in a circle around the edge of the green, aiming to land their bowls closest to the marker. Stephen from Parkland Booragoon was the winner of the competition.

The main bowls competition was divided into two parts. The morning session featured nine ends of play, with teams randomly matched against each other while the spectators and cheer squads from each village rooted for their teams.

The fun didn't end there! In the afternoon, after lunch, the teams were reshuffled for another round of matches to challenge other teams and continue with the gameplay. Parkland Villas Woodlands won the morning game, where an impressive 98-year-old resident was part of the team, while The Pines won the afternoon match. The Pines also took the overall winning village title, making them the grand winners for this year’s event.

In keeping with the tradition that began in 2002, the annual inter-village bowling carnival has remained an anticipated event with residents and this year was no different, both participants and spectators enjoyed the day filled with absolute fun and entertainment.
