Finding the right place for mum

Monday, 23 September 2024

Michaela was relieved and happy to see her mum, Roz, comfortably settled into her new home at Annesley Bowral retirement village.

As our parents get older, many of us find ourselves navigating the journey of ensuring they’re safe, happy and well cared for. Michaela experienced this firsthand. Her journey was full of unexpected moments, but ultimately, she felt a deep sense of peace knowing her mum, Roz, had truly settled into her new found home at Annesley Bowral retirement village.

A time for change

The decision to move Roz into a retirement village wasn’t an easy one. After 60 years together, Michaela’s parents had to be separated when her dad, Len, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. His condition worsened and it became clear that their family home was no longer suitable. Len was moved into a nearby nursing home and the search for a new place for Roz began.

Initially, the family was careful about finding the right new home for Roz, fully aware of the importance of making this transition as smooth as possible. Michaela recalls the mixed emotions that came with the decision. “However, once I found Annesley Bowral, things started to fall into place. The village offered everything mum needed – a safe, welcoming environment, a caring community and plenty of activities to keep her engaged.”

Finding the right place

Soon after moving to the village, the real turning point came when Michaela and Roz faced an unimaginable loss - Len passed away unexpectedly. It was a difficult and emotional time for them both. Michaela admits, “I can’t tell you how relieved and lucky I feel that mum had already moved into Annesley before dad passed. The staff and residents at Annesley Bowral have embraced mum and me during this difficult period. We can’t thank them enough – it’s definitely helped our mental wellbeing and increased our happiness.”

The positive impact

For Michaela, seeing her mum thrive in her new home has brought her a sense of peace. “I can see mum becoming more active, physically and socially, which has made all the difference during such a challenging time. Mum had major surgery recently and while she’s no great athlete, she’s been using the pool almost every day. She looks better, she’s walking more confidently and the regular exercise is really helping to strengthen her muscles. She is also busy making new friends and participating in social events at Annesley.” This is something Michaela is particularly thrilled about as an only child. “It’s imperative that my mother finds her people, other than just me, to spend time with and enjoy her life with.”

Staying connected

The United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing emphasises, it’s crucial that older adults have the opportunity to age safely in a place that suits their needs, where they can continue to grow personally, stay engaged and contribute to their communities, all while maintaining their independence and health. For Michaela and Roz, finding Annesley Bowral was a step toward achieving these ideals. The village provides a supportive environment where Roz can thrive, remain active and enjoy a fulfilling life, aligning perfectly with the principles of ageing well. Michaela describes Annesley Bowral as a 'blue zone,' a term used to describe regions where people live longer, healthier lives. “Annesley is definitely a blue zone in my eyes because Mum is able to stay fit, mentally and physically and be connected.”

Throughout this journey, Michaela’s visits to her mum have become a special part of their routine. Living just five minutes away, she’s able to see her most days, “We thoroughly enjoy walking around the lovely gardens and sitting by the fountain at Annesley. I’ve also had a dip in the pool with Mum, which was fun and we felt great afterwards.”

Making the right decision

When asked what advice she would give to other adult children considering retirement living for their parents, Michaela emphasises the importance of finding a place that provides a strong sense of community. “I’m sure most adult children want their parents to live a happy and healthy life as they get older and to feel a part of a community.”

For Michaela, watching her mum settle into Annesley Bowral has been a journey filled with ups and downs, but the joy and comfort they’ve both found at the retirement village has made it all worthwhile. The sense of community and care that Roz experiences has not only brightened her days, but also brings Michaela peace of mind, knowing that her mum is in a place where she can continue to live a full and happy life.
